Intro to Astro Photography

Intro to Astro Photography

Saturday 06 July
Howden - 7pm - 2 Hours
Brett Meikle
Do you gaze up at the night sky with wonder? What about looking up at the stars and thinking, how old that light you are seeing is? Maybe you watch as day and night morph into one, and the stars come out to play.

This meetup is going to cover off everything you need to know to start capturing amazing single shot astrophotography and a few extra bits of helpful advice. The learnt basics of capturing a single frame will form the building blocks of your astrophotography journey. Think of this meetup as your first step on that journey or for those who have already started, maybe a road sign.

Astrophotography looks amazing and packs a real punch, however, you do not need to spend a fortune to partake. Does gear make a difference, the simple answer is yes, but it is not the deciding factor when it comes to astrophotography. This meetup will look at planning your session, camera settings, required equipment. I want this meetup to help you maximise your current gear as your start capturing milky way shots.

I have been to two of Brett?s photography workshops and each time have come away with new ideas. His ?Golden Light? session was held at Cornelian Bay beach at a perfect time of the day where you couldn?t help but take gorgeous photos. Brett is very skilled both as a teacher and a professional photographer. He makes his sessions entertaining and shares his teaching time equally with everyone in the group. I am looking forward to Brett's next workshop. I strongly recommend Brett's sessions.

This was a great event. It gave me a basic understanding of my camera settings so that I can start to play around with my camera with a bit of an idea of what I need to be doing! Very worthwhile for anyone who has bought a camera and is confused about all the different terminology. Susie was also very down to earth and explained things in a way that was practical and easy to understand.

The view from the top of kunanyi/Mt Wellington is always good but I had a inkling, while overnighting in Hobart looking up at the mountain, it would be special when I saw the cloud drop down from the peak to the valleys. I drove up as soon as it cleared. I'd not seen this effect before. Specially, this time, I also had overseas visitors with me. It made this rare and beautiful view more meanignful to share with visitors.

This was in the very first days of mine at Hobart. I moved from Melbourne to Hobart and was looking for an accommodation. After my work hours, I took a bus to see this house which was advertised on Facebook marketplace. Getting off the bus, walking for a few meters, it was a right turn with a steep climb. Even the cars were moving hard on their lower gears and I also started walking slowly. Walking halfway, I looked back to see how far I have come. To my surprise, this was the amazing sight my e

Title or Location: Big Roaring Beach near Dover, Tasmania
Big Roaring beach is one of my favourite spots down South. I very often come here for walks, (cold water) swimming. I adore the untamed, wild nature of this beach. There's always so much beauty to capture here. From sunrises and sunsets to textures and wild life including these resident seagulls. In this photo I loved how the birds aligned with the waves and the sky all in similar tones with their red legs giving the photo a bit of a pop of colour. Camera used CANON 600D ISO 200 F5.6 1/2000s

I went down to the Hobart Waterfront on 3 March 2024 to catch a nice sunrise but the sky was rather ominous and not what I was expecting. This appearance lasted about 3 seconds and I was lucky to catch the colours.

Title or Location: Breaking Dawn in Hobart (taken in Knocklofty, West Hobart)
Captured at Knocklofty Reserve just moments before sunrise, this photo was meant to offer a blend of natural and urban beauty. Positioned to overlook Ross Bay, the vantage point provided a bird's eye view of the landscape below. As the sun was about to emerge, the sky transformed into a canvas of warm orange and pink shades fading into purple and blue hues. Against this celestial backdrop, the city lights of Hobart still twinkled, illuminating the cityscape, including the Tasman Bridge. With my

This morning was not very promising, but still I was determined to get out and take pictures! Headed to Sunny Sands and found these two rocks in the sand that caught my interest. The tide was rising and the sun started glowing in the sky! "Perfect moment", and the a wave caught me by surprise and made my feet soaking wet! Apparently sign of good luck, and maybe so, it's one of my best images and was definitely worth it!
